Saint FM officially launches today on Island

After months of frustration and obstacles the Saint FM community management team have successfully revived and officially launched the Islands favorite radio station this morning at 0800 local time (GMT)

St Fm is back coming back on air.After weeks of debate with the St Helena Government officials a license was granted for the Saint FM community Radio station to reopen.

The station was opened at 0800 with an opening speech given by Mrs Julie Thomas the chair person heading up the Saint FM community committe, Julie greeted the Saint Fm listeners who were tuned in to the station. (The opening speech can be found below this post.)

Throughout the day around 200 request were delivered to the station audience

Saint Fm can only be heard locally on the Island on FM 93.1 and 95.1 MHZ but do not have a full coverage of the whole Island as it did before the station closed down as the saint FM transmitters had to be relocated from its previous location.

The Saint FM technical team is working towards delivering the service Island wide over the next few weeks.

Shortly after the station opened facebook listeners commented that they were really happy to hear the great sounds of Saint Fm on the air.

The next phase of the launch is to reestablish the online streaming and update the station website.

The opening speech given by Mrs Julie Thomas

Good morning and a very warm welcome to all of our listeners.  What a momentous occasion, another milestone achieved, history in the making as we announce the resurrection of SAINT FM.

For the majority of us, the closure of this station on 21st December 2012 left us with a sense of loss; a household member had been taken away.  These feelings were amplified only four days later, when Radio St Helena said its final goodbye on Christmas Night and left the airwaves.  Radio had died, and so had part of our culture.  Gone were the familiar voices that helped shape our day, gone was the ability to sustain relationships within our community and more importantly gone was the ability to be kept informed of the activities taking place on island and overseas that affected our daily lives.  Our ability to communicate was snuffed out, during a time when communication is of utmost importance.   It is these exact reasons that were instrumental in stimulating the journey that has been undertaken.

On 15th January this year, a number of radio enthusiasts met at Association Hall to start the ball rolling.  A management committee was formed on that very night, with one goal, to get SAINT FM back on air.

The journey, albeit two months, has from the onset demanded hard work, required consistent dedication and has most certainly tested our endurance on more than one occasion.  Attributes, we are more than aware, we will have to continually possess to enable us to overcome the challenges ahead.

Our initial plan was to operate SAINT FM as a charitable organisation, with sufficient funds to operate only.  Our sole purpose was and still is to “inform, educate and entertain” our community and provide the same values for those abroad who have an invested interest in our island.  Unfortunately these sentiments were not shared by the Charities Commission, who declined this application.

To overcome this hurdle, and to enable us to achieve a legal entity, we applied and were successful in becoming a company limited by guarantee.  This was granted on 15th February 2013 and solved the concern raised by Council when applying for our broadcasting licence, as although willing to grant a licence, they were unable to do so in the name of SAINT FM COMMUNITY CHARITY, our initial name, as that status had been declined.  We are therefore officially registered as SAINT FM COMMUNITY RADIO (GUARANTEE) LIMITED.

Our application for a broadcasting licence was resubmitted and Council was reconvened on 22nd February, when full approval of our licence was agreed.

To enable us to apply for this licence, we were required to submit a business plan, to include a technical appraisal and frequency allocation request, our aim, our planned revenue streams and expenditure and our medium and long term developments, therefore it took a great deal of deliberation and hard work to achieve such a task, in a timely manner.

Alongside of our legal entity as a limited company, we operate as an Association, which enables us to raise funds to assist with the day-to-day operational costs and permits us the ability to collect annual membership fees.

Our latest challenge has been the ability to transmit.  We have been tasked with the installation of our entire transmission equipment due to Cable & Wireless not being able to assist at this time, due to current workload.  Test transmissions have therefore been running for a few weeks now, reaching clientele in Jamestown and neighbouring areas only.  Yesterday, this coverage was extended to include St. Pauls, Half-Tree-Hollow, Longwood, Alarm Forest and the majority of Levelwood, therefore there is more work to be done, to ensure we cover the remaining districts, namely Blue Hill and Sandy Bay.   Fine tuning of some areas are still required and will be done throughout the coming week.

When this is complete, we will focus our energy on reconnecting with our loved ones overseas, through live streaming.  You will be kept updated on the progress made and advised when we are in the position to offer this vital link.

Before I conclude, I would firstly like to thank a number of important people; these are:

  • My management committee consisting of Liz Johnson, Les Baldwin, Ralph Peters, Tony Leo, Nick Stevens, Tina Yon-Stevens, Prudy Joshua, Vince Thompson and Donna Crowie.  Your valued input has and will continue to make this mission possible;
  • To Mike Olsson, for giving us full reign of his equipment and for providing all the technical assistance;
  • Donna Crowie our Station Manager for being so patient throughout the downtime of the old and the resurrection of the new;
  • Claire Bennett our newly appointed Assistant Station Manager for coming onboard to share this journey with us;
  • Our existing members, who have supported us and shown faith in us from the onset, you have truly been an inspiration;
  • The families of all those involved who have been tolerant during the weeks of regular meetings, non-stop phone calls and interruptions;
  • Our voluntary producers who are eager to be back on air and who have come onboard at short notice to present programs today and into the coming week;
  • And to all of the many helpers who I haven’t mentioned, many who have been instrumental in getting us where we are today, thank you all.

We will continue to provide you with more information throughout this program on what can be expected from SAINT FM, in relation to our broadcasting capabilities, but without further delay, it gives me great pleasure to officially declare SAINT FM COMMUNITY RADIO open.

THANK YOU

Rough Sea conditions halts unloading of cargo for airport project.

The recent rough sea conditions at Rupert’s Bay has halted the unloading of cargo for the airport project. The N.P. GLORY 4 had to retreat from her mooring in Rupert’s Bay after the sea conditions deteriorated on Friday, sources have said that Basil Read the ships operators knew of a weather forecast and that even though the 78 mtr long RO-RO vessel was moored to the shore in Rupert’s soon after daybreak it was advised that the N.P. GLORY 4 should retreat seaward by 13:00hrs as it was feared the sea would get rougher. Around noon the starboard bow mooring line ‘snapped indicating that it was time to abort to an anchorage off Mundens point and await calmer weather, containers & machinery for the airport project remain aboard, On all of the vessel’s previous visits the sea has been flat calm and cargo operations have been successful. Rough sea conditions are common around the Island between January and March.

Saint FM Community Radio update

Progress update from the Saint FM Community Committee – Another delay Good News! Last Friday, 22nd February 2013, Executive Council met in a special session to consider our response, Council advised and the Governor agreed that a licence be issued to SAINT FM Community (Guarantee) Limited. The fee of £480 which is the charge set for a broadcasting licence operating on four frequencies for a year was paid on the same day. I am also pleased to advise that as of today, I am now in receipt of our licence, so we are now a legal entity with legal right to broadcast. Receiving approval last week, saw work commence on testing transmission from early hours last Saturday morning from Jamestown on 106.7MHz. The response from the public on hearing this transmission has been overwhelming, and for that we thank you. It is our obvious goal to expand our broadcasting coverage to the majority of St. Helena, but this achievement will and is taking longer than anticipated. The main reason for this, is that Cable & Wireless South Atlantic Limited are not in a position to offer a Facilities Management Contract to us to broadcast from various sites as done previously, until they have a completed and commissioned the South Atlantic Media Services Radio. In addition, they are working with their supplier of equipment to confirm the best way to host two radio stations from their sites. To overcome this delay, we are making alternative plans to enable us to achieve our goal in the short-term, temporarily, until Cable & Wireless can provide us with the assistance required. With Jamestown up and running successfully, this weekend, work will commence in expanding our coverage to include Longwood, Alarm Forest, Half-Tree-Hollow and St. Pauls. It is hoped that this work will enable us to include Levelwood, but this cannot be confirmed until the necessary work is complete. If all goes to plan, it is hoped that during Monday of next week, SAINT FM will be reaching the ears of all of the abovementioned districts. If achieved, we will continue working in our agreed vicinities to establish further sites to enable us to broadcast to the remaining districts i.e. Sandy Bay and Blue Hill. Last weekend the Management Committee held two promotional events at H.T.H and Longwood, both were extremely successful and were instrumental in us increasing our membership count from 241 last week to 497 members as of today. This puts us in a favourable position, as SAINT FM Community Radio is now one of the biggest Civil Society Organisations on island, thanks to you and your support. Members of our committee were planning to have a similar event at Levelwood later today, however due to unforeseen circumstances this has had to be postponed. We therefore apologise to any persons who were expecting to register with us at this location, and we will advise you when we are able to reconsider this event. We will continue to strive towards getting SAINT FM reinstated and look forward to updating you again with information we hope, on an official launch date.

Your thoughts and online voting to get Saint Fm back online

The Saint FM community management team lead by Mrs Julie Thomas were very please with the outcome of support for the promotion day that was held outside of new horizons on Saturday in Jamestown.

The promotion day was aimed to educate members of the public face to face on how the Saint FM community radio would benefit the Island.

The team also took the opportunity of registering yearly membership for the organization.

Membership cost £5 per year for citizens employed on St Helena and £1 for unwaged members.

Despite the frustration and failing to become a registered community charity over the last few weeks there have been lots of progress since the recommend decision was taken to become an established company limited by guarantee.

Although there are a few more bridges to cross before the station can become operational the future looks positive.

A local advert has been published for an assistant station manager to assist with the day to day running of the station.

The team has said that the objective is to get Saint FM fully operation again and listeners have a choice to become members of the community station by paying the yearly membership or if they would like to donate they are welcome to this. (details of how this can be done will be published shortly)

For listener’s overseas negotiations are on going to reinstate the streaming of the station via the Internet. we will publish more information as it becomes available.

www.clickonsthelenaisland.com and www.sthelenaonline.org  (Uk Base) are supporting the new Saint FM organisation and we have created an online vote/poll to get a better understanding on how overseas listeners feel about paying a yearly membership to help support the organisation if the statistics from this vote looks favorable we will publish more information on how to submit your fees for membership.

Remember to deliver Saint Fm to your home via the Internet and achieve our objectives The Saint Fm community needs your support

Please select two options and complete the online poll below

Remeber you can only vote once

The voting has now closed thank you for support

Saint FM could be back online soon.

After weeks of frustration the team attempting to revive Saint FM radio station appears to be close to success.

Over the next few days we will be getting your feelings on how you feel about St FM coming back on line.

We  would also like your thoughts on becoming members of the new organization as the new team plans a successful journey for the Islands well love radio station.

You can read more about it here

We will shortly be publishing an online survey to get your views on membership for overseas listeners to St FM.

SHB(G)C force to change company name as it launches its first radio station on St Helena

At 7 am on the 13 February 2013 the first of three planned FM radio stations were launched by South Atlantic media services, (formally SHB(G)C

South Atlantic media services ltd is the new brand name that has replaced the St Helena Broadcasting guarantee cooperation ltd.

The name change came as a sudden announcement on Tuesday as a result of a formal complaint that had been raised back in December by the official registered owner  of The St Helena Broadcasting cooperation, Mr Mike Olson to the companies’ registrar.

Mr Olson objected to the use of the name St Helena Broadcasting guarantee cooperation ltd as the name St Helena Broadcasting cooperation was officially owned and registered by him with the company’s registrar.

After much negotiation between the two parties either party was able to reach a satisfactory decision.

Two of the board members (Terry Richards and John Styles) from the South Atlantic media services ltd, made an apology statement via there new station on the situation of the name change and apologized to the public for the inconvenience.

During the statement Terry commented that SHBGC ltd was advised through legal advice that the change of name was the best way forward as there was a risk of a potential successful legal challenge by Mr Olson

The new organization will now operate under their new name South Atlantic Media Services ltd.

The newly launched station will host 6 hours each day with news and information and will also rebroadcast the world service over night.

The local FM transmitter frequencies on the island  Jamestown: 102.7MHz,  High Knoll: 90.5MHz, Blue Hill: 105.3MHz, Level wood: 105.1MHz

MSC Sinfonia lands passengers successfully after overnight stay.

Today was a success for some of the passengers of the MSC Sinfonia who were able to get ashore on the Island today.

After another assessment was made of the sea conditions at the landing steps early hours this morning the captain and tour operators of the MSC Sinfonia declared that it was safe to land passengers .

The MSC Sinfonia arrived at James Bay yesterday morning only to find that the sea conditions were not favourable or safe for passengers to go ahore, Disembarkation of passengers began shortly after 6 am and tours around the Island began, although it is not known how many passengers were privileged to come ashore.

It was also observed that not as many taxis were available first thing this morning for the Island tours as the taxis and mini buses that were allocated for the visit yesterday were used for Island transport for school runs and home to duty transport for the Island workers.

The MSC Sinfonia departed Jamestown at 13:30 this afternoon.
